American Icon Returns to Miyagi
KANAN - November, 2004. In March, 2005, in the Town of Kanan, near the City of Ishinomaki in Miyagi Prefecture, there will be a 3-day series of opening events for a new Civic Center and Performance Hall called Yuakukan ("Hall of Happiness"). On Sunday, March 26th in the "Culture Auditorium", American ragtime pianist Bob Milne will perform. Milne, designated an "Honorary Musical Citizen" by the people of Kanan-Cho, recently became the subject of a documentary by the U.S. Library of Congress. He is considered on of the best ragtime, boogie woogie and stride piano players of all time.
Milne will premier his rendition of Kojyo No Tsuki ("Moon Over Deserted Castle") at his performance in Miyagi Prefecture, said to be the site of this haunting, melancholy tune. Joining Milne on the stage will be Master Kagami, one of only four men alive today able to perform the incredible art of daikagura juggling. Milne and Kagami have performed together in Japan and America, offering an amazing and wonderful blend of indiginous artistry.
